THE NEXT DAY I SPENT digging in a little more into Jack’s victims. At least the ones we knew about. It seemed to me that either of them would have a fine motive for setting him up. Personally, I couldn’t blame them for that part of it. I’d be ticked off too.

But the fact remained that in order to set him up, they would have, themselves, had to commit the same type of crime that he had. That didn’t feel right to me, but then again, the Mayor’s wife wasn’t a very popular person from what I’d been hearing. So maybe they didn’t consider it a real crime.

Maybe they considered it more like killing two birds with one stone. Besides, according to their plan, the Mayor’s wife got her jewelry back. So, technically, they only borrowed it.

My intuition was staying silent on this one. Darn it. I really wished it would kick into high gear soon.

In my digging, I found that the evening before the necklace was reported stolen, the Mayor had hosted a charity fundraiser right there in his own home. From what I was reading online about the event, pretty much the whole town had been invited. The guest list was an open call. That didn’t really help to narrow anything down.

Too bad, too, as I was fairly certain that was the night the necklace was stolen. I checked the photos posted of the event, but she hadn’t been wearing it that night. She’d went with pearls instead of her diamonds. Probably thought it made her look classier. There’s just something about a woman in pearls.

But I did find one thing while I was going through the massive number of photos. I found Jack.

It was getting harder and harder to believe he didn’t do it. And photo evidence of him at the scene of the crime really wasn’t helping Merlin make any kind of case for his innocence either.

He really wasn’t making this easy on us. At all.
